Imelda May- Mayhem

Rockabilly is already an interesting type of music on its own. Add a strong female vocalist like Imelda May and her band and you have gold. May does a really great job mixing her funky almost Southern tone with a deeper blues vibe than most other rockabilly. I had a lot of fun with Mayhem and it is a pretty good album. Most of the album is upbeat, May singing about the positive sides of love which is nice but at the same time feels a little overdone. For anyone who has been looking for an easy entrance into the rockabilly scene, I think Mayhem might be the right album for you. For more seasoned listeners I think you will appreciate how she handles the genre and the blues twist she uses but you will immediately be reminded of bands like The Cramps, Reverend Horton Heat, or Devil Doll, bands that just do it better. I guess all in all this album is good but for a diehard rockabilly fan I think you should pass on this and stick to what are sure fire wins.
